Poland and Czech Republic

page 3 - Biskupin - Kruszwica

Me with Mikus's family at the historical 'park' Biskupin.  This was formerly an archealogical site.  Polish scientists found remnants of a fortified wood settlement along a lakeshore from 2000 - 3000 years ago.  Now they built it back up according to its original form.  So I guess even in the old times everyone needed a castle to keep out the 'riff-raff' beggars, marauders, and American tourists.  Too bad it didn't last!

Pictured left to right are me, Roman, Basia, Jadzia, and Marek.

Me and relatives in Kruszwica.  This tower is part of the remnants of an old castle build during the Piast dynasty. (first Polish royal dynasty).  There is an interesting and funny legend surrounding this tower, which involves a treacherous king (Popiel) who poisoned all his opponents and buried them in the lake you see in the background.  Then some hungry and hardy mice, attracted by all the corpses, followed them from the lake into the tower and ate them alive.  So we pretended to put a mouse inside Jadzia's jacket.  As you can see she is howling from pain of being bitten by that mouse.

Pictured from left to right are Jadzia, Marek, me, Roman, and Mikus.  Mikus was my host, tour guide, and interpreter throughout my stay in north central Poland.  He is a good driver, too.  And he likes to take shortcuts!

Roman was not happy to have to climb all the stairs by himself.  We would have carried him, but the roof in the stairway was too low.
