Poland and Czech Republic

page 12  - Prague

This is the Prague Castle overlooking the city of Prague.  It was my last stop on this 'lightning tour' of central Europe.  I don't suppose you knew that Vlacev Havel (the President of the Czech Republic -- sorry for the bad spelling) lives there?  He does.  In fact the tour guide the next morning told me that he walks around in the courtyard among the tourists.  What a cool guy!

Prague is very beautiful, like everyone says.  I really liked the city for its cheap beer and food.  It appeals to my thrifty side.  It also appears to appeal to many other western tourists, who can't hold their beer very well.  That's too bad.

The 'Charles Bridge'.  I didn't get the opportunity during my one day there to get onto the bridge to take some better pictures of it.  It is really famous, and has old statues on the side you may have seen in movies like 'Mission Impossible' (how's that for fine culture) or on postcards.   The bridge was built in 1357, according to my tour book.

I was in kind of a hurry the whole time I was in Prague (between 7 PM and 1 PM the next day) because I had to find accomodations (a youth hostel in the Kampa area) and then try to see all the sights I could before my train left the next day for Frankfurt.  So, I made use of the Prague subway (pictures next page) going underneath the Vltava river instead of walking across the nice old bridges.  I walked around the downtown area at night and took a guided tour of the palace the next morning.
